Dead Heat reworked

Earlier this year, I painted a small study for this painting, then a larger version with altered colours. I thought I'd finished, but it has just been returned from the Southern Pastel Artists annual national exhibition in Invercargill, where it won second prize, but it just seemed to need something. I talked to a couple of gallery owners, the prognosis was that it was too big with it's double matboards. I decided to have it completely reframed, and with that, decided to rework the foreground which looked way too static for a couple of previously powerful old trucks. Here is the process from the finished reworked painting back to the initial version. Two vintage trucks and a bath...

I've been working on this pastel painting since I left for Dunedin, and the opening of my solo exhibition. I was delighted that the Artists Room Gallery sold four of the paintings before they even arrived in Dunedin. The two paintings I carried down in the car sold at the opening, six in total which is wonderful. Thanks to Michelle and Cath for an excellent opening, my first solo since I was 17, and I'm not going to say how long ago that was! I'm considering holding a solo bi-annually - well, two yearly.

I used True Vu Museum anti-reflective glass on several, it's expensive, but what a huge difference it makes with no reflections to distract the eye. It's also 99% UV protective.
I'm going to carry on using this amazing product, which will also go on this new painting, finished today.

Since my return home, I have thoroughly enjoyed working with the layers in this painting, the bulk were created using Art Spectrum's 'Colourfix' pastels, which match the colours of the primer and paper. I love the subtle shades of Rose Grey, Soft Umber, Elephant, Blue Haze which is kind of green - anyway, along with my favourite Unison pastels, these made up the bulk of the painting. So here it goes, from the finished painting back down to the early stages. I'm not quite sure where this one will go for exhibition yet,
it's off to Main Street Art & Framing for a gorgeous frame (and glass) tomorrow.

The model is Catherino II, owned by Adrienne Staples.

Solo Exhibition 'Homeward'

Opens at the Artists Room Fine Art Gallery, 2 Dowling Street, Dunedin at noon, 8th October.

I've been working hard to create new works for this exhibition, which will include some recent works as well.
I wish I was able to paint faster, but I seem to be slowing down. Maybe it's a good thing. Good things take time.

The exhibition title is based on this painting, an oil on panel. Landlife Images kindly agreed to allow the purchase of their image for the painting.

This is a recent painting, currently being framed in time for my solo exhibition at the Artists Room Fine Art Gallery, Dunedin. With my new pastel paintings for this exhibition, I've taken the expensive leap of using the very high quality True Vu Museum glass, which is 99% UV protective, but also is very anti reflective, it's like looking through water. I'm really looking forward to seeing how this one looks in its frame.

This one was a real pleasure to paint, I had the concept ages ago, and added the dog, Ben, which gives a nicely balanced composition. I created the background from memories, which has turned out to be very much like the area where the pony (Piglet) lives. She's an inquisitive character, sweet nature, eventually pulled the supplejack stick out of Paul's hand, and threw it on the ground. A very social group -all three!

My newest painting, a small study, which was a delight to paint with so many colours including aqua and violets.
My husband took the photo somewhere in the back of beyond near Taihape, he didn't think much of the photo, but I pounced on it and took the colours up a notch, while simplifying the scene.

Life got in the way of a timely finish on this one, then I decided to live with it for a couple of days.

So now, it's finished! 490mm x 670mm, painted on Art Spectrum Colourfix 1200gm board.

I hadn't quite finished with these trucks, and I could see the next painting could be taken way beyond the photograph I'd been using - so this one is larger, and I've had so much fun painting the rust and the metal, and the upper background, which doesn't look like much, but is many layers of dark green grey and violet, plus the lighter cool greens and even some apricot tones on the top.

I can't divulge my underpainting technique, largely experimental - but I will say the lower texture is a result of serendipity - the artful accident...and I plan to leave some of that showing. I always start an underpainting with great plans of leaving it showing, but in the end I usually don't, and it becomes just a great tone to work over. I often use complementary colours in an underpainting, but not in this case. I have no standard formula for this, it's purely instinct driven. Here's my process, and progress. I hope to finish the painting later today.

I've also had a thing about drawing lately. I've been quiet on the blog as it took a good month or more for my creative mojo to return after teaching workshops for most of January. Mostly I love teaching, the interaction with people keen to learn and grow their abilities, but in one of the classes I had a pupil unlike any I've had before, with high expectations of their own abilities, then annoyed with me when they couldn't just grasp the painting concept and do some nice work - kind of threw me really - an artist-in-training can't expect to paint like me in their first year of learning to paint. Let's see - I've been painting since I was about 7 years old, and that's more years ago than I would care to add up! In excess of 40 anyway, and that's all I'm saying about the matter, I rest my case. Practice is everything, every day.

So then I was struggling at the easel. and I think it happens to many of us when we set our standards high, and a negative experience deflects our focus. And I decided the best thing for me to do was to get right back to basics and draw - like I teach all the time - so many budding artists think they'll just paint without the essential benefit of learning to draw first. So I drew - and I haven't stopped drawing - although I have stopped teaching for a few months. I think I need to learn some new skills, and I want to grant myself the gift of free time to explore and revise.

Dead Heat

A new painting, which sold very quickly, showing a couple of old trucks resting in a paddock way out the back of Mangamahu, near Wanganui. My lovely husband took the photograph, knowing what I like.

To me, it looked like they were engaged in a never-ending race, probably against time and deterioration,
a bit like people I guess.

So this was a small pastel painting, on a quarter sheet of Art Spectrum Colourfix. I really enjoyed working on it, I have a leaning towards wanting to paint machinery, amongst painting horses, I think it's because they both have purpose, a vital part in our lives.

So - a large new truck painting is on my easel today, with a background lightly painted with dark oils and white spirit, I want this one to have an edge, even an ominous edge...will keep you posted!

This is the first Dead Heat - (study) - using mostly Unison pastels, some others and a couple I've made myself.

NZ Stockmen Placemats

Late last year I was delighted to hear from Jasons Placemats, NZ, asking for license to use one of my stockmen paintings for a set of placemats - they weren't sure which one to use, so I directed them to the appropriate page on my website. After seeing that, they decided on a whole set of 6 placemats and 6 drink coasters. Very exciting! For the first three years of our contract, these will be available from Briscoes and Farmers in New Zealand. If successful, they may market the set to selected countries overseas (they export to 32 countries), which would be even more exciting!
I have some sets available in my studio ($60 altogether for both sets, autographed on the box). I'm happy to post these anywhere, a set has just gone off to Kent, UK in fact, and one to Scotland soon.
They are colourful and glossy, nicely presented in dark green boxes.

For their Christmas exhibition, opening next week, where all works are under $400.00,
I created two new little oils, below, and have supplied three Limited Edition Prints on canvas. Thse three are the small size, beautifully framed by Renata, at Main St Art & Framing, Wanganui.

Both paintings are from what I call 'drive-by shootings' - when my husband is driving, and I've got the window down and the shutter speed up! On a journey to the lovely Hawkes Bay, I took these two drive-bys, both are framing using a foiled tray frame which is a subtle but enhancing frame for a canvas:

Deadlines and new paintings

Apologies for no new posts in a while, I've been caught up in the pre-Christmas flurry of exhibitions held by the 4 galleries I exhibit with in New Zealand - although I've only supplied two with new work, and will be a bit late for the third! I'm beginning to resent deadlines, every time I really push a painting out, I'm never happy with it. The best works are those which flow, with no pressure, and the necessary time to live with the piece, making whatever tiny or major adjustments needed. Distractions are many these days, including technology!

My main computer lost a main drive, luckily I had a back-up, but I lost all my email contacts and settings, and had to reload all the programs, re-organise everything, buy a back-up to the back-up machine, and finally a laptop. So it was an expensive loss of time!

Which made all these deadlines just that much tighter. Of course, a deadline is also packed with opportunities.

So I have been busy, here are some of my new works, along with some painted earlier in the year - these are exhibiting with The Artists Room gallery, in Dunedin, NZ:

Featuring my great model Paul, on Jake, with Charlie. I've given these horses white markings on their faces this time, and refined Charlies head a little. This one will be finished later today, I'll post the finished version then.

Biscuit Tins!

I was approached by World Wide Imports, Christchurch, NZ, to create two paintings which will be reproduced as these classy biscuit tins. I'm really thrilled with the outcome, these are the samples. The colours are more natural than the image. These paintings will also be published by the Image Vault, available for purchase in August 2010, along with Southerly Change and Taranaki, Fields of Gold (image below the tins).

The tins will be part of the Christmas range sold by the Warehouse throughout NZ.

Unfolding complete. I wanted to add a bit more excitement to the piece, so there are
great scuds of violet in various shades, amongst the rust and green gold in the background.
I added paler violets to the petals on the cool side. Off to the framer now.

This is my latest pastel painting, the background taken from a photograph my husband Jasio took, from Mt Maire, near Taihape, of Mt Ruapehu, in the north island of New Zealand. It features my wonderful model Paul, and his dogs, as they contemplate the view on a sunny early spring day. This painting will be published as a print.

This area is special to both Paul and myself - he spent most of his working life on farms in that area, and I was born in Raetihi, not far from Taihape.
The painting is 470mm x 670mm, plus double mat boards & frame, private collection.

As usual, Saturday classes run from 9:30am - 4:30pm, BYO materials.

I stock Unison Colour artists pastels ($7.50 ea) and Art Spectrum Colourfix sheets ($9.00 ea)

I have easels and worktables, a fully catered day with great food, music and inspiration.

Fee of $160 for the day, $60 deposit with your booking please.
(non-refundable but may be transferable if I have enough notice)

Classes limited to 5 at this stage. Please let me know if you need a materials list.
Saturday workshops are held in my studio in Wanganui.

I'm planning on running a Winter School for oil painting or pastel painting,
from the 12th - 17th July, over the winter holidays, in the rear print room,
UCOL, Taupo Quay, Wanganui
With these workshops, pupils can attend from a minimum of 3 days, to all 6 days.

It could be a case of BYO easel if the numbers are higher than my easel count.

'Birs of Paradise Over St Bathans' (alias Under Southern Skies)

this painting is complete - I think! Along the way, as I worked with the texture I'd crated beneath the paint, a bird shape came through - remember how we found shapes in clouds - well, that's how it happened.
Currently the painting is on a spare easel, face to the wall for a few days. I think it's there though, nothing more to say about that moment when the clouds hung over me, wafting their way to the conclusion of another day in paradise.

New painting well under way now, I hope to finish it today! Oil on canvas, 36" high x 48" wide, like a huge window into the sunset over St Bathans, Central Otago, NZ. It'll be on the market once completed. I started with a golden underpainting, which I could have done without, as I ended up covering it completely. Usually in past works I've let the underpainting tones show through. I'm having a lot of fun working with the clouds. I've always wanted to paint the sky, this could be a start of yet another series!

These images show the process of the oil painting I've just finished, from underpainting, to first layers, the the completed piece. It can be difficult to know when to stop - but after several decades of painting, I know to lay the brushes down when there is nothing left to say - or when enough is painted. Painting is a visual language, like any conversation, it is possible to talk too much!
This painting is part of a series I'm painting about the Whanganui River, which is rich in our history.

New Paintings...

Finished today - Ace Ventura and D'Anjou Limelight, both oil on canvas, both available at my studio/gallery.

Ace Venture is inspired by the graffitti on the bridge supports under Dublin Bridge, the textures of the concrete and reflections in the water were almost identical. I textured the canvas first, underpainted next and built it up over many layers of transparent glaze.

I was going with the flow last night til about 2am, it's so great to paint in the quiet of the early morning hours, with my favourite Mark Knopfler tracks keeping the vibe going. I love to paint pears, I know many of us do. These glowing specimens were gifted from my Father-in-law Boleslaw's tree. They all shared the 'limelight' for this painting. I painted thinly in places so the underpainting tones would be visible.

Back to the easel now, one big pastel to improve and some new smaller pastels to begin.

New Series: 'The Endurance of Trees: Hush...'

My latest pastel painting, which has required a lot of patience and more time than I ever imagined!There have been several nights when I've been back at the easel at 3am trying to have this painting say what I want it to say.

I love walking beneath the mature trees in Whanganui's James McGregor Park, which bravely stand against the elements - and the vandals who try to break them. When the morning is misty, and they often are alongside the river, the trees take on a sense of mystery and agelessness.

I'm always attracted by trees in rows, planted carefully by someone with a sense of order - trees take a fair bit of painting to create in a natural way - now that I'm beginning to manage that, there will be more tree paintings to follow.

Meanwhile I'm working hard to be ready for Whanganui Artists Open Studios, which begins with the 'Sampler' exhibition 'Made Here' at the old Federal Hotel on Friday 19th March from 5pm. Not sure which one I'll enter yet! The idea is to whet the appetite of art lovers who can then easily choose the studios they'll visit over the two weekends.

Back to the easel now, altering a couple of works which no longer have the 'x' factor to me - if they ever did!
Then I'll have the rewards of working on fresh paintings for the Open Studios - smaller works.

New Painting: 'Off the Beaten Track, Ngawi'

This hunter's hut is way up a quiet valley past the Ngawi village.
The only sounds were the birds and bugs.

It is painted in pastel - mainly Unison, with Art Spectrum Colourfix pastel stick in Terracotta, on a full sheet of Art Spectrum Terracotta Colourfix.
I enjoyed leaving areas of the vibrant rust coloured paper showing through.

Well - Hello followers! This is my very first post of many - I'd like to share with you my newest paintings, where you can find them, my latest prints available around NZ, details of my workshops through January, and painting tips and insights.

Firstly there are my two new large pastels, 'The Black Beauty' and 'Rapport'

Some info - 'The Black Beauty' is a standardbred named Sam, the painting is 700mm x 840mm, plus a fabulous frame. It is currently exhibiting at Peter Reynolds Interiors, Rotorua.

'Rapport' is a portrait of Wanganui horseman Paul Duncan, with his friend Jake (the Muss). These two get along very well, Jake is a mass of glossy muscles. Sam (Black Beauty) also lives on Paul (and Jude's) property.
This painting is 500mm x 700mm, plus matboard and another gorgeous frame, currently exhibiting at Art South, in Gore.

Arum Lilies I

A new painting at last! Other projects have taken over this week. I started this one as a demonstration during my workshops - it's had a few tweaks and glorious glazes, finally capturing (I hope!) the effect of early morning light suddenly illuminating Arum Lilies in James McGregor Park, Whanganui.
